New Jewish Cemetery in Kraków
The New Jewish Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Kraków where numerous graves and tombstones and memorial plaques of prominent Jewish persons are located.
Situated in Miodowa Street 55 the New Jewish Cemetery was established in 1800 and further expanded in 1836 is the largest Jewish cemetery in Kraków with area of approx. 4.5 hectares where around 10,000 graves, tombstones and memorial plaques from the World War II era are located.
This magnificent cemetery contains a lapidarium and pre-burial house built in 1903 designed by Władysław Kleinberger, and also a war cemetery of the Jewish members of the Polish Armed forces from World War I which was recently renovated.
The New Jewish Cemetery in Kraków was renovated post war and is a functioning cemetery to this date, where many international tourists and locals come to visit the graves of the deceased relatives and famous Jewish people who lived in Kraków and Małopolska are across centuries.
Prominent people buried here are, among many others, Chaim Aryeh Leibush HaLevi Horowitz, Rabbi Nisan Shneirson and Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Epstein (1754-1823), author of "Maor Vashemesh" - a classic work of Hasidic literature which is a collection of commentaries and sermons on the Torah and Jewish holidays.
The opening times of the New Jewish Cemetery are Sunday to Friday 09:00-16:00 and it's closed on Saturdays and on Jewish Holidays.
