Jan Matejko Square
Jan Matejko Square is located near the Kraków main railway station and Barbican and it is one of the most notable tourist spots to see when in Kraków.
Jan Matejko Square (Plac Jana Matejki) is located in the very centre of Kraków between Basztowa and Warszawska streets, right next to the Barbican, Planty Park and St. Florian Church.
The most important part of Matejko Square is the Grunwald Monument erected in 1910 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the victorious Battle of Grunwald in 1410 where Polish-Lithuanian forces defeated the Teutonic Order army.
The monument was designed by Antoni Wiwulski and funded by Ignacy Paderewski, famous polish composer and politician. It was later destroyed during the German occupation of Poland but was reconstructed in 1976. It features a marble slab of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The Matejko Square is marking the beginning of the Kraków's Royal Route which leads from through Florian's Gate, the Main Market Square and ends at the Wawel Castle.
The Jan Matejko Square is one of the most important spots on the touristic map of Kraków, so make sure to walk there when you're in the area.
